Space-Based Energy Systems (SES)

Energy production will be a key component of any architecture for human settlement of the Moon and beyond. Energy is also one of the most critical needs – some would call it a crisis – we will face here on Earth during the coming decades. The mission of the SES Project Team is to generate ideas for new projects involving Japanese and U.S. researchers and their affiliated organizations that will advance the technology of energy production for use in space, on the surface of the Moon, and on Earth. Such projects might focus on the articulation, design and demonstration of certain aspects of space solar power, such as ISRU-enabled production of solar cells, energy storage, power beaming, system design, and robotic construction & maintenance. They also could address methodologies for producing He3 from the lunar regolith to support future fusion power plants on Earth or in space. SES projects will take advantage of the resources and infrastructure provided by Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems currently under development by JUSTSAP and the State of Hawai‘i.
